Description of the Workshop Day:
This workshop will be in the Studio working from photographs. Plan for an eight-hour workday. Every morning there is a lecture/demonstration with a completed painting each day. Everyone breaks for lunch and finishes the day with 3 to four hours of painting and a group critique at the end of the day.

Abstract Landscape Using Oil, Cold Wax Medium & Mixed Media Studio Workshop This workshop will cover two main topics: Pushing toward Abstraction in one’s artwork as a way of loosing up, as well as using a variety of tools, techniques, and mediums. Experimenting with Cold Wax Medium as an addition to oil paint will be covered as a way to add texture, layering, and mark making. Using all the basics of landscape painting as a foundation toward abstraction will be heavily discussed. Adding a variety of tools and Cold Wax Medium in order to achieve beyond the basics while allowing exploring new directions in their own artwork.

There will be 2 mornings learning and perfecting plain air techniques on a small canvas at a private home at Ocean Forrest, Sea Island. Then in the studio you will learn how these paintings will be used as reference for larger work. Peggy has used these techniques for over 25 years to paint canvases 30x40 and larger.

The workshop is open to intermediate to advanced levels of artists and you are invited to use previously completed plain air paintings.

Description:
In this workshop we will paint architecture in the southern landscape en plein air. We will discuss the plein air process and a few things to simplify that process by eliminating excessive gear and materials. In addition, we will have in depth conversations on perspective, using a viewfinder, composition selection, lighting, the notan sketch. Notan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery Each day will begin with a demo and discussion lead by the instructor and end with a critique of the days work. In between these session will be time for the students to draw, sketch and do the exercises. More time will be spent on finished paintings as the workshop progresses using the sketches and exercises done earlier in the workshop.

Throughout the workshop the instructor will demonstrate his approach to painting en plein air while aiding students on an individual and group basis. There will be critiques and assessments (how much depending on time allotment), so come prepared to ask questions, take notes and paint! It should be fun and relaxed but also a learning experience for all.

Objectives:
• Teach you to think more artistically, while attempting one of the toughest artistic exercises—painting landscapes outdoors.
• Expand your purposes beyond the basics of shape, color, value and edges, into more complex principles and elements of design.
• Develop your knowledge of wet-on-wet oil painting, and ways to use your tools
. • Empower you to make better choices when deciding what and how to paint.
• Introduce you to painting larger canvases outdoors, and in multiple sessions.
• Demonstrate how to add nocturnal painting to your repertoire.

Using thick paint, palette knife and bold brush strokes, Michele will teach the impressionistic approach to oil painting. Emphasis on design, value and composition to tell a story. Discussion on the importance of composition and value and how to create a dynamic value study. Learn many different palette knife techniques and how to manipulate paint for different visual effects. Students will also spend time focusing on adding the figure to their paintings. Each morning Michele will do a short demo and then students will paint from a photograph and work one-on-one with the instructor.Create dramatic paintings with palette knife and impressionistic brushwork. Design a painting through value and strong composition.

Robert Johnson is an OPA Master. This workshop will focus on developing an understanding of the essential elements of painting that have been passed on through the centuries from teacher to student, master to apprentice, and artist to artist. Brush strokes will be heavily emphasized as means to depict form, achieve expressive power, and maintain a painting’s feeling of spontaneity and life. Robert will teach the importance of an understanding of values, edges, light and color to create a powerful and memorable painting. Still life and floral will be the subject matter of the workshop and students can feel free to choose the subject or subjects they wish to paint. Robert will demonstrate the still life. The class is open to all levels.
